Full-Time Branch Clerk

Summary:

The Branch Clerk position is responsible for circulation services, shelving and providing reference and readers’ advisory services. This position provides exceptional customer service to patrons and community groups at a branch location. The position also assists in the development and implementation of programming.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • The ability to meet scheduled hours with rare absences; includes evenings and weekends
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 6 months – 1 year experience; customer service experience preferred
  • The ability to use Microsoft Office applications, the library automation system, email and the Internet
  • The ability to understand and communicate routine work related information
  • Commitment to excellence in customer service and representing the library in a positive manner

Essential Functions:

  • Check materials in/out using automated circulation system
  • Process library card applications in accordance with library policies and procedures
  • Shelve and maintain library materials
  • Tender fines
  • Assists with the development and implementation of programming

Additional Functions:

  • Basic readers’ advisory
  • Maintains minor repairs to materials as needed.
  • Maintain neatness of public areas including desks, counters, shelves, table, floor and personal space visible to the public
  • Other Duties as Assigned

  • The ability to operate library automated circulation system with a degree of efficiency
  • The ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing
  • The ability to provide friendly, high quality service at a public desk
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of basic library operations
  • The ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information, accessing such information for legitimate library business only
  • Knowledge of and compliance with library policies and procedures
  • The ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other staff members and library departments
  • Knowledge of and compliance with emergency and safety policies and procedures
  • The ability to deal with frequent interruptions in work and move among various tasks effectively The ability to learn and implement current and emerging technologies

Special Requirements:

  • Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation / vehicle
  • Update job-related knowledge and skills through continuing education workshops, webinars, conferences and staff development activities

Physical Requirements:

  • Considerable manual dexterity for use of keyboard and standard office equipment
  • Requires ability to manipulate library materials, such as books, magazines and DVDs
  • Requires a combination of sitting, standing and walking for the majority of a shift
  • Requires regularly lifting items weighing up to sixty pounds
  • Some reaching, bending, climbing, and twisting
  • Ability to push full book carts for considerable distances
  • 60% computer work
  • Minimal outdoor activity; majority of time in climate-controlled environment
  • Regularly required to talk and/or hear within normal ranges
  • The ability to respond to alarms and communicate safety information to patrons and staff
  • Visual acuity for sustained use of computer monitor
